Hudson River and Bannerman Island at Sunset

Hudson River and Bannerman Island at Sunset, by John Morzen

"Two weeks ago, I wanted to go somewhere nice with a couple friends, enjoy the evening and maybe check out the sunset. Originally I had my heart set on the Village of Cold Spring, Little Stony Point Park or the Cornish Estate, but while we were driving, the sunset was practically calling to us and the trail head of Breakneck Ridge seemed like the right choice, all of a sudden. I hadn't been there all year, and I'm pretty sure one of my friends had never been there - the view, as you can see, did not disappoint.

There were a few other people up there taking in the scene, as well - some talking about Bannerman Island, off in the distance. Being the Online Manager of the Bannerman Castle Trust, I get a kick out of hearing what strangers say about the Island sometimes. And, I was glad to hear the people who were talking about it that evening were fairly well-informed.

For those who don't know, the Bannerman Castle Trust hosts tours of the Island every weekend, departing from Beacon Dock at 11am and 12:30pm, from May through the end of October. If you haven't been, you should come check it out."

"This is Sugarloaf Mountain on the warm Spring evening of May 24th. Cars are frequently lined far along Route 9D but most are visiting the more popular hike, Breakneck Ridge. Sugarloaf offers a different perspective on the Hudson River and is rarely busy like its neighbor mountains."

"Earlier this month, a close friend of mine was preparing for a move across the continent. Even though she had spent most of her life in our area, before she left, I made it a goal to show her a number of interesting places around the Mid-Hudson Valley that she had probably never seen before. In the process, I ended up discovering a few hidden gems, myself.

The day before she left, we ended up spending quite a bit of time by the River. It was a gorgeous, warm day, and while standing at the edge of the water, and unsure of the next time she'd get to see it - we decided to take off our shoes, walk in, stand in the seriously cold water (57 degrees, at the time) and just appreciate it for what it was. It's our River - and there's really something to it. I didn't have my camera on me at the time, but it was a remarkable moment.

A little later on that day, we'd go to another spot on the water, out of the way, in Poughkeepsie, where I got the above shot - at her suggestion. I think it came out really well."

"I had made it a point to pick up a one month pass from Mohonk Preserve for their Healthy Ulster County promotion in April. Unfortunately, my busy schedule only allowed me to use it once, on the last day no less. And so, I chose to visit Split Rock via the Shongum Trail at the West Trapps trailhead. I had never visited Split Rock before. But, the photos I had seen of this location always expressed beauty and serenity. And Split Rock definitely lived up to those expectations. It's definitely worth the visit."

"I had read online about the marvelous view of Overlook Mountain from Thorn Preserve on John Joy Road, so I decided to check it out. It truly is a lovely view of the mountain, I especially like the path cut through the field for the Preserve. I did not have time to go exploring today, but I will certainly be back!"

Beacon Falls, at Midnight

Beacon Falls at Midnight by John Morzen

"While visiting Beacon on Friday night, I decided to go check out the waterfalls, toward the end of Main Street. I had seen a lot of photos of them, driven past them countless times, and probably stopped a few - several years ago, but, had never been there with a camera. I was thrilled to see how they look at night, and was able to get the shot I've been wanting to for a while.

I really like how the water, lighting and even the background lights came out in this. The City of Beacon, and everything the community as a whole, is doing there, seems to get nicer, every time I visit. I highly recommend checking it out."
