With 8,000 acres of mountain cliffs, forests, fields, farmland, streams, ponds and marshland, Mohonk Preserve is New York’s largest nonprofit nature preserve. The Preserve’s mission is to protect the Shawangunk Mountains region by inspiring people to care for, enjoy and explore their natural world.
Each year, over 200,000 visitors come to Mohonk Preserve to get into nature through hiking, biking, birding, rock climbing and bouldering, trail running, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The Preserve’s over 70 miles of historic carriage roads and trails provide pathways for people of all ages and abilities to explore over 1,600 species of plants and animals that make their homes in this special place. |
The Preserve offers a rich schedule of public programs including monthly early morning bird walks, weekend hikes and children’s outings that encourage everyone to get into nature. Our Visitor Center, which is free and open to the public seven days a week, features a video orientation theater and interactive exhibits, along with the accessible J&S Grafton Sensory Trail, LaVerne Thompson Nature Trail, and Children’s Forest. Our other trailheads at Spring Farm, West Trapps, and Coxing each have unique hiking trails, and the West Trapps is the center of world-renowned Gunks climbing.
In addition to recreation, Mohonk Preserve offers award-winning programs in environmental education, conservation science, and land protection and stewardship. From school programs and camps to citizen science and research fellowships, the Preserve helps people explore nature in hands-on ways. |
